Movie Based Pedagogy: Learning Marketing through the Movie ‘Rocket Singh Salesman of the year’

Movie based pedagogy has been a much recognised tool for the learning experience enhancement of students worldwide. This pedagogy refers to the use of films as educational tools in the teaching and learning process. Incorporating movies into education can have several benefits and contribute to a more engaging and effective learning experience. Here are some reasons why movie-based pedagogy is considered important:

Visual and Audio Stimulation: Movies provide a multisensory experience through visuals, audio, and sometimes even tactile sensations. This can help in better understanding and retention of information, especially for students who are visual or auditory learners.

Cultural and Social Context: Movies often reflect the culture, society, and historical context in which they were created. Using films in education can help students gain insights into different cultures, perspectives, and historical events, making learning more contextual and relevant.

Enhanced Understanding: Complex concepts or historical events can be challenging to grasp through traditional teaching methods. Movies can bring these concepts to life, providing a more concrete and relatable understanding for students.

Emotional Connection: Films have the power to evoke emotions, and this emotional engagement can enhance the learning experience. Students may develop a deeper connection with the subject matter, leading to increased interest and motivation.

Critical Thinking and Analysis: Analyzing movies involves critical thinking skills. Students can be encouraged to analyze characters, plot structures, themes, and cinematography, fostering higher-order thinking skills.

Language Development: Movies provide authentic language input in a natural context. They expose students to real-life language use, including slang, idioms, and various accents, which can contribute to language development and cultural literacy.

Diverse Perspectives: Films often showcase diverse perspectives and voices. Incorporating movies from different cultures, countries, and time periods can broaden students’ horizons and promote a more inclusive and diverse educational experience.

Technology Integration: As technology is an integral part of modern life, incorporating movies into education aligns with the use of technology in the classroom. It can enhance digital literacy and prepare students for a technology-driven world.

Storytelling Skills: Movies are a form of storytelling, and studying them can help students understand narrative structures, character development, and the art of storytelling. This can be valuable for developing students’ own communication and writing skills.

Engagement and Motivation: Movies are inherently engaging, and using them in the classroom can capture students’ attention and motivate them to participate in discussions and activities related to the content.

While movie-based pedagogy has its advantages, it’s important to use films purposefully, aligning them with educational objectives and ensuring they contribute meaningfully to the learning process. Additionally, considerations such as age appropriateness, content relevance, and accessibility should be taken into account when integrating movies into the curriculum.
