Capacity Building of Librarians and Academicians on the Use of Digital Tools and Repositories in Libraries

The IQAC of Asian Business School, Noida, organized a capacity-building session on the topic “Capacity Building of Librarians and Academicians on the Use of Digital Tools and Repositories in Libraries” on Friday, 15th November 2024, in online mode. The session was conducted by Dr. S. Nagaraja, Deputy Librarian, Regional Institute of Education, NCERT, Mysore. A total of 52 participants from across India attended the event, all with an intellectual and academic bent of mind.

With the advent of the information revolution through the internet and the World Wide Web, there is now access to and dissemination of numerous digital library tools and resources for learners. The aim of the session was to familiarize participants with current digital tools, including software and online platforms, in order to enhance their productivity and effectiveness. The purpose was to promote technology-rich learning and foster interactive user engagement through various cost-effective services.

The speaker covered a wide range of platforms, such as blogs, instant messaging tools, online productivity tools, photo-sharing tools, presentation tools, survey and polling tools, social bookmarking tools, and video-sharing platforms. The session included examples of various digital repositories available through premier institutes, such as the IIT Bombay Institutional Repository, IISc Repository, Dspace@TISS, and government-sponsored platforms like Shodhganga, eGyanKosh, and the National Digital Libraries of India. It was also informative to learn about the domain-wise availability of global repositories, such as CORE for research outputs, arXiv for STEM disciplines, and SSRN for the social sciences.

In light of the information age and the vast distribution of data to gain a competitive edge, this workshop informed the audience about the indispensable digital tools and libraries that modern librarians, readers, and knowledge seekers must utilize to remain dynamic and resourceful. In hindsight, the usefulness of the session lay in the ability of librarians to efficiently collect, organize, and disseminate web-based information, thereby evolving in the digital age.
