Father of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in India, Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee lends a graceful touch to the ABS PGDM Orientation Program 2020 as Chief Guest!

Part of Asian Education Group and ranked as one of the best B-schools in Delhi NCR Asian Business School (ABS) welcomed its new batch of Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM 2020) by launching a grand three-day Orientation Program scheduled from Tuesday, 11th August 2020 to Friday, 14th August 2020 at its beautiful campus strategically located in Sector 125, Noida. In view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and keeping in mind the social distancing norms, this programme was organized virtually to benefit the students who were about to begin a new phase in their academic life.

At the ABS PGDM Orientation 2020 Inaugural Ceremony held on Tuesday, 11th August 2020, Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, Director General & CEO, IICA – widely acclaimed as the Father of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in our country – graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee is widely acclaimed as the ‘Father of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)’ in our country. He was instrumental in framing and issuing the CSR guidelines for Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs) in April, 2010. Thereafter, he played a major role in the inclusion of Section 135 in the Companies Act of 2013 and in the framing of the rules thereafter. Today, as the DG & CEO of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), he spearheads the National Foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility (NFCSR).

Dr. Chatterjee is also a widely acclaimed management practitioner, theorist and teacher and has been writing on issues of social and sustainable development, corporate responsibility and human resources.

He joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1975 and has held many distinguished positions. In 2008-09, he was the Principal Adviser in the Planning Commission. He was part of the team responsible for shaping India’s response to the global economic crisis of 2009.

Dr. Chatterjee is a prolific writer. In 1990, his first path breaking work entitled “Japanese Management – Maruti and the Indian Experience” was published. Thereafter, in 2009, he wrote his famous book “Human Resource Management – A Contemporary Text”. His widely acclaimed book, “Leadership India – Leading Change, Changing Lives” was released at the World HRD Congress in February, 2011. Dr. Chatterjee has most recently authored his book entitled “Sustainable Futures – Imperatives for Managing the Social Agenda”.

Today, as the Director General & CEO of the IICA, Dr. Chatterjee is preparing strategies for capacity development, knowledge dissemination and quality research.

Delivering the chief guest address at ABS PGDM Orientation Program 2020 from virtual platform, Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee at first thanked the management and leadership of AEG for giving him this opportunity to be here and observed that he was impressed by the positive vibes of all the speakers before him.

Dr. Chatterjee then congratulated the students for joining Asian Business School which was a part of a great institutional effort and asked the students to utilize this opportunity to the best of their abilities. He especially talked about the “trust and faith that parents have placed on you” and asked the students to “find a space and build a rewarding career through self-fulfillment and work your way up the ladder of success.” He further stated that, “In a way you are also blessed to be enrolling yourself for this management course in the SHADOW of the pandemic because when you emerge in the SUNSHINE in the post-COVID era, you will find yourself better equipped to take up the challenges of the new corporate world.”

Speaking about the forced transition of education from the traditional mode to the online mode, the erudite guest said that “this was not distance education but a great step to meet up the pandemic challenge through the use of technology and innovation.”

He asked the students to concentrate on their professional development through the discovery of answers to questions like “Who am I?”, “What do I want out of the world?”, “Can I become the agent of change in society?”, and “How do I do something worthwhile in this world?”

Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee concluded his most interesting talk by advising the students “You should love what you do” and wished them a very bright future ahead!
